LAURENS - Michael E. Michehl, 62, of Laurens, formerly of Fort Dodge, died January 12, 2013 at his home.

Services will be 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 17, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Edward Durand officiating. Interment will be in Colfax Township Cemetery with military honors presented by V.F.W. Post No. 1856 and the United States Navy Honor Guard. The visitation is 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Memorials may be directed to the discretion of the family.

Michael is survived by his wife Kathy, Laurens; sons, Travis, Alta; Trevir, Okoboji; one grandson Kevin; his parents, Ralph and Margaret Michehl, Fort Dodge; and his sister Linda Haug, Omaha, Neb. He was preceded in death by his son Trent and his brothers, Craig and Perry.

Michael Ernest Michehl, the son of Ralph and Margaret (Jones) Michehl, was born April 26, 1950 in Fort Dodge. He attended Fort Dodge schools and then enlisted into the U.S. Navy where he was a Seabee and served from 1968 to 1970. He was a Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient. Following his discharge, he returned to Fort Dodge and worked for his father's construction business and at Omaha Cold Storage. On October 30, 1971, Michael was united in marriage to Kathy Buettner in Fort Dodge. He was a deputy sheriff in Webster County and always was involved with construction. Later he served as city building inspector for the community of Alta from which he retired.

Michael loved his family and loved his country. He enjoyed watching pro wrestling and riding motorcycles with his sons. He loved to create and build things with his hands. Michael was an avid gardener and enjoyed canning.
