Anton Hemesath, 80, died early Friday morning, August 8 at the Senior Hospice where he had been a resident since October 1967. Mr. Hemesath had been in poor health several years.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, August 7 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis De Sales Church. A concelebrated mass was held by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. V.J. Peters, the Rev. John Schmitz of Ossian and the Rev. Richard Bohr of St. Lucas. Burial was in the De Sales cemetery with military rites conducted by members of Brockman Hammersland American Legion Post 503.

Pallbearers were Gary Shevik of Cedar Rapids, Louis Suchan, Gerald Hemesath, William Murphy, Harry Oakland and Leo J. Barthelme of Ossian.

Anton Hemesath was born June 8, 1893 at Fort Atkinson, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Hemesath. His early years were spent at Fort Atkinson. He later moved to Ossian where he lived the remainder of his life.

During world War I he served overseas from February 1918 to April 1919 seeing heavy fighting at the front lines.

On his return to Ossian he married Elizabeth Schroeder February 10, 1920 at St. Francis De Sales Church. They became the parents of seven sons and daughters: Ray Hemesath, Ossian, Linus Hemesath and Dorothy (Mrs. Bill Huckens) Cedar Rapids, Irvin Hemesath of Corina, Calif., William Henesath, Mesa Ariz, Irene (Mrs. Francis Denning) of Riverside, Calif. and Richard Hemesath of Rialto, Calif.

He is survived by his children, 18 grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Bertha Bauman of Flood Wood, Minn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife June 21, 1952.

Mr. Hemesath served as town marshall street commissioner and water superintendent of Ossian from 1927 to 1946.
