Herman Anderson enlisted under Captain August Gasman in Company I of the 15th Wisconsin on November 4, 1861, for a 3 year term of service. The men of Company I called themselves the "Scandinavian Mountaineers." They were also known as the "Waupaca Company" because so many of its members were living in that Wisconsin county when they enlisted.

Herman came to America with two brothers, Henry Ahl and John J. Anderson. Herman and Henry Ahl both served in Wisconsin regiments during the war - Herman in the 15th and Henry in the 47th. I have found no record of John's service. Their parents, Anders Jensen and Karen Sophie Andersen, are buried at Skjeberg Kirke in Norway.
