James L. Bryant was born October 11, 1840. He was the son of Thomas Bryant and Susan (Niblack) Bryant.
In 1850 James, age 10, resided with his parents in Calhoun County, Florida.

On January 10, 1861 Florida seceded from the Union and the Army of the Confederate States of America was formed. Bryant enlisted as a private in Company A of the 1st Florida Cavalry and served under Captain Roberts' Company in Davis' Regiment, Florida Cavalry. He mustered in May 12, 1861. On October 12, 1861 he served Company B, 1st Cavalry Florida. He was 22 years old. He enlisted on October 3, 1861 in Lake City by Captain Roberts for a period of 12 months. He rose in rank to 3rd Corporal, Co. A October 10, 1861 to April 30, 1862 and was paid $79.60 for the use of his horse.

There was little incentive for newcomers to settle in Polk County, Florida but around 1869, the Thomas Bryant family of thirteen settled in the Peace River area.

In 1880, Bryant, age 39, lived with his father, Thomas Bryant and siblings, Edward Bryant, Ramsey Lorenzo Bryant, Thomas Jasper Bryant, Silas Felix Bryant, Robert Bryant, Edward Bryant, Thomas Jasper Bryant, Silas Felix Bryant, Robert Bryant, Mary Amanda Bryant, George Bryant, Charles Bryant, Luther Bryant, Hiram Bryant, Susan Bryant and Emory Bryant, in the area of the 5th Election District, Polk County, Florida.

In 1885 at the age of 41, James remained unmarried and resided with his father in Polk County.

On October 26, 1898 Bryant passed away and was laid to rest at Socrum Cemetery. It is located 10 miles north of Lakeland on State Road 35A.
