Donald W. Gentzler

York, Donald W. Gentzler, 95, died peacefully at 8:20 a.m. Sunday, January 14, 2018, at Senior Commons at Powder Mill in York. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn L. (Ehrhart) Gentzler, to whom he had been married 60 years.

Donald was born August 22, 1922, in Stoverstown, one of six children of the late Robert D. and Orpha (Bankert) Gentzler.

Carolyn and Donald were married on December 14, 1947. He was a graduate of the West York High School Class of 1940. After graduation, Donald enlisted in the United States Navy, where he received training in medical records and x-ray technology. He returned home in 1947 to partner with his father, Robert D. Gentzler, in the family grocery and hardware business, R.D. Gentzler and Sons, in Stoverstown.

Carolyn and Donald retired in 1978 from the store, which they successfully owned and operated for 31 years. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Stoverstown. In addition, he also served on the Susquehanna Bank Board (formerly, Spring Grove National Bank) and a member of the Patmos Masonic Lodge.

He leaves to cherish his memory a son, Randall D. Gentzler and wife, Trudy of Parkton, MD; five grandchildren, Travis, Ryan, and Zachary Gentzler, Megan Gentzler Pham and Lauren Gentzler Anglum; eight great-grandchildren, Austin, Bradley, Emily, Finn, and Maximus Gentzler; Kelsey Gentzler Anderson; Parker and Peyton Pham; two great-great-grandchildren, Isabella Anderson and Dawson Gentzler; and a sister, Flo E. LaPrarie of York Haven.

Mr. Gentzler was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn L. (Ehrhart) Gentzler, a son, Brad K. Gentzler in 2005; two sisters, Ethel G. Miller and Pauline U. Slagle; and two brothers, Richard D. Gentzler and Arthur E. Gentzler.

A funeral service in celebration of his life will be held on Thursday at 11 am at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 4767 Lehman Road, Spring Grove, with his pastor, the Rev. Dr. Bradley H. Dayett, officiating. He will be laid to rest following the service next to his wife at St. Paul Union Cemetery in Stoverstown. A viewing will be held on Thursday from 10-11 am at the church. Family services are under the direction of Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Service Inc. of Spring Grove.
