Services for Carl Fant, 86, were held Saturday

Funeral services for Carl Fant, 86, Williamsburg, were held Saturday, Feb. 25, at 10 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Williamsburg. He died at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, at 6:15 am Wednesday, Feb. 22, 1989. He had been a patient there for the last five weeks. Death was due to pneumonia complicated with emphysema. The Rev. Anthony L. Conrad celebrated the Mass assisted by David O'Brien, deacon. Lector at the service was David Kozishek, while altar boys were Conn and Morgan Hanson. Gift bearers were Sean and Mary Wetjen. Those assisting in the service were of Williamsburg. Organist for the service was Dorothy (Mrs. John J.) Donahue. Soloists were Elaine (Mrs. Francis) Dillin, who sang "Ave Maria" and "Panis Angelicus" and Renee (Mrs. Erle) Driscoll who sang "Song of Farewell: Rest in Peace." All musicians were of Williamsburg. The congregational hymn sung was "Bread of Life." Flower attendants were Agnes (Mrs. Delmar) Wetjen, Marengo and Connie (Mrs. Dale) Baack, Homestead. Ushers were Robert Hanson and Williams Shannahan, both Williamsburg. Burial was in the church cemetery. Casket bearers were Gerald Carney, Douglas Blythe, James Schwarting, Dean Stoddard, Harlan and Myron Heitman, all Williamsburg; Delmar Wetjen, Marengo and William O'Meara, Chicago, Ill. The rosary was recited at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home, Williamsburg at 6:30 pm, Friday, Feb. 24. Carl Fant was born in York Township, Iowa County, near Williamsburg, June 11, 1902, the son of Axel and Minnie Klever Fant. In 1909, the family moved to a farm in Pilot Township, west of Williamsburg and Fant attended the rural school in the area. On Oct. 1, 1924, he married Effie Hradek at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Williamsburg, the Rev. John Glenn officiating. The couple farmed the Hradek home farm west of Williamsburg until moving into Williamsburg in 1930. Fant was employed by the Iowa County road maintenance department from 1930 to 1934. He then began his own garage and lawn mower repair shop in Williamsburg until retiring in 1979. The Fants built their present home in 1965, and after retiring from his mechanical business, he continued his interest in small engines and pursued his wood working hobby. Always interested in mechanics, he had built motor bikes, go-carts, miniature steam engines and his first power lawn mower. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Williamsburg. Survivors are a daughter, Irene Wetjen (Mrs. Hugh) O'Meara, Williamsburg; a brother, Adolph Fant, Cedar Rapids; five sisters, Anna (Mrs. Clark) Heitman, Williamsburg; Carrie (Mrs. Clarence) Wandling, Marengo; Ruth (Mrs. Elmer) Imhoff, Center Pont; Elvena (Mrs. Otto) Hopp, Conroy and Dorothy (Mrs. Merritt) Plagmann, Norway and two grandchildren, Dean and Mary Wetjen, both Williamsburg. He was preceded in death by his wife, Effie, Dec. 24, 1988; his mother, Jan. 30, 1955; his father, May 1961; a brother, John Fant, Feb. 17, 1977 and a sister, Mary Fant, July 8, 1922.
