Robert was born in Kentucky and moved with his family to Missouri sometime between the 1910 and 1920 census. We know that he attended the 8th grade (ca 1918) in Mineral. By the 1920 census, he was living in Mineral WA with his mother and sister, where he remained until his death. He was a retired logger.

In 1922, he married Bertha Lockhart. They had one child, a daughter named Wanda. He married his second wife wife, Chelsea McPherson in Tacoma WA on July 22, 1924. They had two sons - Robert and Jack.

For many years after his marriage, he lived with his wife in a small shake house with a wood stove for heating and cooking and no indoor plumbing. In the mid-1950's the extended family built a new home for Robert and Chelsea with all of the modern conveniences on the lot next door.
