Mary Nell Couch, 85, of Martin, died Friday, October 31, 1997, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Union City, Tennessee.

Services were 2 pm Sunday at Murphy Funeral Home Chapel wtih Dr. Roger Oldham officiating. Burial was in East Side Cemetery in Martin.

David Boucher, Keith Kennedy, Lou Odom, Johnny Estes, Billie Jo Boyd, G. T. Hall, and Eddie Joe Pearce served as pallbearers.

Mrs. Couch was born September 3, 1912, in the Mt. Pelia Community, daughter of the late Carl and Mae Ellen Hilliard Poyner. She attended the University of Tennessee Junior College and graduated from the University of Tennessee Martin. She was the widow of Lewis Couch.

She was a retired school teacher and a member of First Baptist Church in Martin, where she belonged to the Willing Workers Sunday School Class and the Myrtice Owens Missionary Circle. She was an Eastern Star, and a member of the National Association of Senior Friends and Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include two daughters, Jenny Couch Dowell and son-in-law Billy Gene Dowell of Union City and Judy Couch Taylor and son-in-law Pat Taylor of Bolivar, MO; and four grandchildren, Ginger Dowel and Billy Gene Dowell, Jr., both of Union City, and Marijo Taylor and Charla Taylor, both of Bolivar, MO.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Hillard Poyner; and two sisters Ailene Miles and Virginia Poyner.
