Asa W. Aldrich enlisted as a Private in Company H of the Eighth New York Heavy Artillery on August 20, 1862, in Elba, New York. On October 23, 1863, he was promoted to Corporal, and later to Sergeant on February 25, 1864. He mustered out of the service on June 5, 1865, at Munson's Hill, Virginia.

After the war Asa was a member of the Woodbury GAR Post #45 in Adrian, Michigan.
