A career army officer, who achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel, he graduated from the Virginia Military Institute, in Lexington, Virginia. He was in Texas on official business when he met Edwina. He was active in St. Mark's Episcopal Church, where he sang in the choir. He was active in many other musical groups, as well, including singing in a barbershop quartet and playing saxophone in a jazz group."
