Mr. Tom Close, 76, retired farmer, law enforcement officer, and concrete worker, died Monday, August 18, 1975, of heart failure. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Taylor County Hospital. A native of Green County born May 28, 1899, and the son of the late Christopher Lee and Nancy Elizabeth Risen Close, he was a resident of 415 Poplar Street, Campbellsville. Mr. Close was a member of the Brush Creek Baptist Church in Green County. He was a retired farmer of the Saloma community. In earlier days, he was also a concrete block layer and finisher, building several houses and downtown buildings. He was a Campbellsville policeman for about 3 1/2 years until March 1961, sheriff from 1962 - 1967, then spent almost a year of an elected term as jailer before retiring due to illness. He was a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, American Legion Post 82, and a veteran of World War I. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Alice Elizabeth Hudgins Close; three sons, Dean Close of Mesquite, Texas, Russell Close of Tucson, Arizona, and Bobby Close of Campbellsville. Eleven daughters survive: Mrs. Dorothy Davis of Morehead, Ky., Mrs. Lula Mitchell of Orlando, Florida, Mrs. Wanda Stone of Pascagoula, Mississippi, Mrs. Frances Benningfield, Mrs. Helena Warren, Mrs. Betty Chick, Mrs. Lorene Caulk, Mrs. Nancy Druin, Mrs. Sue Holmes, Mrs. Faye Sallee, and Mrs. Phyllis Milby, all of Campbellsville. Also surviving is one sister, Mrs. Mittie McCubbin of Gabe, Ky.; thirty-six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held in the Lyon Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 20, with the Rev. D.L. Druien officiating, assisted by J. Chester Badgett. Interment followed in the Campbellsville Memorial Gardens. Honorary pallbearers were Floyd Wise, Hershel Dabney, Mike Dix, Sam Berry, Marion Davenport, Paul Johnson, Sr., Tyler Parrott, Rubin Burkhead, and Elijah Johnson.
