Edith E. Westervelt, age 97 left to be with the Lord January 7, 2013 at 3:03 am at Medicalodge of Columbus.
She was the seventh of nine children born to Wiley E. Wilcox and Bertha Baker Wilcox and the last one living. Preceding her in death were 3 brothers Harvey, Homer, and Wayne and 5 sisters, Gertrude Helwig, Flossie (Tat) Sauder, Mary Crain, 4 year old Elsie and an infant Retha.
She married Harold Westervelt September 5, 1940 at Girard, KS. He preceded her in death October 10, 1991.
Edith was baptized into Christ as a youngster in a farm pond and became a member of Sherwin Christian Church along with her family. In 1950 she moved to the Center community with her husband and 3 children. At that time she became a member of Center Christian Church and has been an active member for 63 years. She always considered Center and Sherwin both as her home churches.
After graduating from Columbus High School, she received her Normal Training Certificate and taught one year at 93 school and 2 years at Crossroads. Both were rural schools.
Edith was a member of Golden Hours EHU for 60 years and was a community leader for Center Busy Bees 4-H Club while her children were young. She always worked on the farm and also worked over 10 years as an assistant cook at Greenlawn school.
Surviving are two sons, Neil Westervelt and wife, Joy of Iola, KS and Paul Westervelt and wife Marilyn of Columbus; one daughter Judi Grant of Columbus; 9 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Edith lived a long and happy life.
Services will be at 10:30 am, Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus, KS. Pastor Denis Johnson will officiate. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery, rural Columbus, KS.
