Funeral services for Maxine Odom James, 85, of Slaton will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at Englunds Chapel in Slaton, with the Rev. Steve Campbell officiating. Interment will be in Engelwood Cemetery under the direction of Englunds Funeral Services of Slaton.

Maxine passed from this life on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, after an illness.

She was born to L.C. Dick and Cecil Odom on April9, 1918, in Lockney. She moved to Slaton in 1920, where she attended Salton schools and graduated from Slaton High School. She attended TCU in Forth Worth and was a member of a Greek sorority. She returned to Slaton in 1937. In 1953 Maxine married Guy James and moved to Hobbs, N.M. She was a member of the Hobbs Literary Club, the Hobbs Country Club, and the Hobbs Chapter of the DAR. They returned to Slaton in 1963. She was a dance instructor in Lubbock, Slaton, and Post before she retired in the 1980s. She was active in the Slaton Senior Citizens Center.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Beth and Bernie Mittemeyer of Lubbock; two grandsons, Brant and his wife, Lesli Smith of Houston, Adam and his wife, Amy Smith of Slaton; great-grandchildren, Shepherd and Braden Smith of Houston, and Carter Smith of Slaton; four step-grandchildren, Jan and his wife, Mary Beth Mittemeyer of Montrose, Ala., Tom Mittemeyer of Portland, Ore., Rob Mittemeyer of Washington, D.C., and Sarah and her husband Thom Shea of Chula Vista, Calif.; five step-great-grandchildren, Adele, Hanna, and Andrew Mittemeyer, and Autumn and Garrett Shea.
