Mrs. Pollard Dies; Widow of Newspaper Executive

Mrs. Lorena Elizabeth Ralston Pollard, 72, former Rockford resident and widow of a Rockford daily newspaper executive, died Wednesday night in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where she had resided 12 years.

Her husband, Harry William Pollard was associated with the old Rockford Daily Republic from 1909 until 1928. Mr. Pollard was business manager and treasurer of the afternoon newspaper, later merged into the Rockford Register-Republic. He died in 1943 in Detroit.

Mrs. Pollard died in the Sun Ridge Manor Nursing home in Fort Lauderdale, which she entered about a year ago. She had been ill several years.

She was born Sept. 12, 1887, in Caledonia township, Boone Co, daughter of William A. and Janet Ralston, pioneer settlers, and was educated in rural schools, Rockford high school, and Brown's Business college here. Later she worked for the old Rockford National bank.

On Oct. 31, 1911, she was married to Mr. Pollard, who had joined the newspaper advertising staff after being associated with the Rockford Lumber and Fuel Co. Mr. Pollard was business manager and treasurer when Harry M. Johnson was president of the Rockford Daily Republic.

After they left Rockford, Mr. Pollard was in charge of the tourist and travel adverstising section of the Cleveland, Ohio News. He later was associated with a Springfield, MO newspaper and a national advertising agency in Detroit.

Mrs. Pollard was a member of Willow Creek Presbyterian church, Argyle. The Pollards had no children.

Survivors include a brother, Benjamin Arthur Ralston, 69, R. R. 1 Caledonia, where Mrs. Pollard was born.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16 in Atkins-Johnson funeral home, Belvidere. The Rev. Edwin M. Oliver, retired Methodist minister, will officiate, and burial will be in Greenwood cemetery, Rockford. Friends may call in the funeral home Monday evening.
