James was the second of eight children of Isaac Lincoln Simpson and Elizabeth C Kenny. He was born and raised in Eugene, Oregon.
In 1908 James married Sadie Simpson. They lived in Spokane, Washington, and had two children: James and Audrey. James was a clerk for Union Pacific Railroad.
By 1920 James and his family moved to Alameda, California. James worked as a clerk in an insurance office. In 1940 he was a vice president of an insurance company even though he had only completed eighth grade. Living with them was James' mother-in-law, Eva Busby, a widow at age 82.
James and Sadie divorced, and in about 1951 he married Ardis. They lived in Los Gatos in the middle of an apricot orchard. In 1959 James died of coronary thrombosis and a ruptured appendix.
