Stanley W. Potts
Fitchburg - Mr. Stanley W. Potts, age 87, of No. Truro, formerly of Fitchburg, died Saturday, December 29, 2012 following a long illness. He was the husband of the late Joanne P. (Paine) Potts who died in 2002. Mr. Potts was born in Ashland, NH, the son of the late Henry E. and Bernice W. (Werden) Potts. He was a graduate of Fitchburg State College. Following graduation he moved to Provincetown and started teaching at Provincetown High School. In the 1940s while attending the Methodist Church he met Joanne Paine whom he married in 1951. He stopped teaching school and they moved to Fitchburg where he became a machinist and worked at The Dixie Cup Co. which later became the American Can Co. He enjoyed working with his hands. He was an avid gun collector and gun enthusiast. He became a manufacturing and technical consultant to fire arms manufacturers and dealers. He produced and patented target stands that were used by various police departments throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire. He also had an auto repair business that he operated from his home until his mid 60s. He was a member of the Harvard Sportsmen's Club, the Lunenburg Sportsmen's Club, serving as Vice President, the Gardner Rifle and Pistol Club, the state Rifle and Pistol Club, the National Rifle Association, the Dune Buggy Association and the Order of Free and Accepted Masons. Locally he was a member of Aurora Lodge in Fitchburg. He was a Mason for over 56 years. In 1985 he was appointed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Mental Health to the North Central Area Board of Mental Health. He is survived by his children, Mary Louise Cenotti and her husband Daniel of No. Truro, Margaret Ann Potts of Falmouth and Steven E. Potts of No. Truro, his 4 grandchildren, Katrina J. Scoullar of Eastham, Desiree J. Jones of Provincetown, Erica M. Cenotti of Eastham and Chad S. Cenotti of Attleboro and 6 great grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to visit the family between the hours of 1-3PM on Saturday January 5, 2013 at the Gately Funeral Home, 94 Harry Kemp Way in Provincetown. A Graveside service will take place the following Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. in Old North Cemetery Route 6, Truro, across from the Truro Police Station.
