Chronicler whose 'Survey of London' is the greatest historical record to describe the pre-Great Fire city. His achievement did not enrich him - toward the end of his life he was awarded a 'licence to beg' from James I. His grave is marked by a terracotta effigy, and each year the Lord Mayor ceremoniously places a quill in the figure's hand.
