B. M. VAUGHN, ATTORNEY HERE 53 YEARS, DIES

Byrde M. Vaughn, 789, a practicing attorney in the city for 53 years and a former member of the Wisconsin legislature as Wood County's representative in the assembly from 1932 to 1938, died at his home, 121 Drake Street, at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, following a heart attack.

RESIDENT SINCE 1867

Mr. Vaughn had been a resident of Wood County since 1867 when at the age of five he came to Rudolph to live with his maternal grandfather, Alanson Blake, a pioneer in this section of the state.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Episcopal Church, the Rev. James Madison Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the family lot in Forest Hill cemetery. The spring term of county court here was recessed until Wednesday afternoon out of respect for the veteran attorney.

Mr. Vaughn, for many years prominent in Progressive party circles in the county and the state, was elected to the assembly in 1932, serving three terms, during which time he was chairman of the important judiciary committee.

ONCE HEADED DITY SCHOOLS
Earlier, Mr. Vaughn had been superintendent of city school here for six years and a member of the school board for seven years; served on the county board four years; had been court commissioner for over 30 years, and held the office of city attorney for five years.

He was born November 30, 1862, at Byron, Fond du Lac County, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Wesley Vaughn. His father enlisted the following year in the Union army and died at Natchez, Miss., while still in the service.

In October, 1867, Byrde M. Vaughn came to Wood County to make his home with his grandfather at Rudolph, and it was in this family, amid pioneer conditions, that he spent his childhood. He attended district school and later graduated from the Howe High School here with the class of 1880. He then entered the University of Wisconsin, graduating with a degree of Bachelor of Science with the class of 1885. He then entered the university law school, during which time he worked in the law office of the late Robert M. LaFollette Sr.

OPENED OFFICE IN 1888

Completing his law course in 1888, Mr. Vaughn at once opened an office in this city with C. A. Copeland. At the end of a year the partnership was dissolved, and since that time Mr. Vaughn had practiced alone. He was well known in legal circles, being a member of the Wood County, district and state bar Associations and serving as president of the county association at one time.

Mr. Vaughn was married July 23, 1893, to Mae Elizabeth Southard of Baraboo, who preceded him in death in September, 1921. One son, Robert W., died in February, 1916.

Mr. Vaughn is survived by a daughter, Catherine Ruth, and a son, Carl, both of this city.

Funeral arrangements are in charge of Baker & Son, and the body will lie at the Baker mortuary where friends may pay their respects until the time of services.
