The body of 10-year old Donald Brabbit, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Brabbit, 478 West Third street, was recovered at 3:20 p.m. Friday within a hundred feet of where he had waded to his death in a deepwater hold of Crooked slough at the foot of Olmstead street an hour and a half before.
Fireman Martin Peplinski and Traffic Patrolman George Fort located the body and brought it to the surface. One of the hooks on the fire department's drag caught under an arm of the naked body. The body was already turning blue, and it was useless to attempt resuscitation with the pulmotor rushed to the scene of the drowning by Fire Chief H. G. Putnam and Fireman Peplinski.
The boy's mother and a sister, waiting with other members of the family on shore while the slough was being dragged, were nearly prostrated by grief when the boy's body was brought to land covered with a cloak and laid on a dock to wait removal to an undertaking parlor.
Accidental Death, Verdict
Dr. E. M. McLaughlin, acting coroner, called to the scene of the drowning, declared death was accidental and that no inquest would be held. The boy, with a companion of his age, Harold Wetzel, 665 West Fourth street, had left his home about 1:30 p.m. saying he was going for a ride on Harold's bicycle.
A brother said he warned Donald when the boys left not to go swimming. The boys went to the swimming hole off Frog island, and Donald drowned when he stepped over a ledge into water about ten feet deep. He clutched at young Wetzel and caught hold of him, and Harold Wetzel said Donald almost dragged him down.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the home, 478 West Third street, the Rev. Paul Shannon of McKinley Methodist church officiating. Burial will be made in Woodlawn cemetery. Pallbearers will be playmates of Donald as follows: Bernard Jennison, Raymond Jennison, Glen Helgemoe, Maynard Helgemoe, Jackie Thompson and Eugene Thompson.
