Mrs. W. A. Hockett, of Newton, died Tuesday afternoon at 5 o'clock at the home of her aunt, Mrs. Samuel Ghan, 5 South Neosho street. She has been in bad health for the past four years, and her death resulted from a general nervous breakdown.
Marth Finnell was born in Bradley county, Tenn., July 30, 1852. When she was about ten years old she moved with her parents to Hamilton county, Indiana, and after living there several years, they moved again to Sangamon county, Illinois, near Springfield. When she was about 14, the family moved to Kansas, settling near Lyon county on their farm northeast of town, near East Lake. She was married November 1, 1877, to W. A. Hockett, and one daughter, Mrs. J. H. Carmain, of Newton, was born to them. During the past five years Mr. and Mrs. Hockett have lived in Newton. Besides her husband and daughter, Mrs. Hockett leaves four brothers, J. W. Finnell, of Newton; W. Robert Finnell, of Sedalia, Mo.; George A. Finnell, of Pueblo, Colo.; Albert D. Finnell, who lives near Emporia, and one sister, Mrs. C. H. Tweedy, of Emporia.
She was a member of the Methodist church and was devout in the faith and earnest in the work. She was of a generous, kindly disposition and unselfish in all her ways. The funeral services will be held this afternoon at 3 o'clock in the Grace Methodist church and will be conducted by Rev. E. J. Gardner. The interment will be made in Maplewood cemetery.
