Ambrose Ridley was the second son of James Ridley. His mother was Ruth (Small) Ridley.

He went to Harpswell, Maine with his father as a boy and spent his early years hunting on the eastern rivers.

When young he went through the wilderness from Harpswell to York, York County, Maine where he settled and lived for several years.

He subsequently moved to Alfred and lived there the remainder of his days.

He died in 1834, aged 87 years.

As described in a work of reference pertaining to Ridley family genealogy, "He was strong-framed, muscular, hardy and invested with a strong constitution."
