s/o Samuel Pottinger Jr. and Lucinda Jameson. Age 30

James nicknamed “Jeems” was born in Capt. Sam Pottinger's old log house, near the Pottenger Fort. He was named after James Allen, a prominent lawyer of Bardstown, KY. He married Elizabeth Jane Weathers (D/o William Weathers and Elizabeth Graham) on Feb. 14, 1839 in Bloomfield, KY. They lived south of Bloomfield for a while and then moved back to New Haven to manage his 700 acre farm willed to him by his father. He was the only child of Sam & Lucinda's 12 children that preferred to have his last name spelled "Pottenger" on many documents, but all his children used the “i” spelling.

James was murdered playing cards one evening in the town of Bardstown. He had gone to Bardstown on business with his brothers William and T.J. on January 18, 1847. James was known as a good card player and was invited to play cards at a local tavern by Turner “Fud” Wilson, Sr. and some questionable associates. James stayed behind while his two brothers returned home to Gethsemane. At the card game, after James was accused of cheating and then taking insults, the two associates held James down and Wilson stabbed him, he died shortly thereafter. Wilson got off on a plea of self-defense. (Author’s note: 33 years later, Wilson’s son “Fud” Jr. was stabbed to death in Bardstown while his arms were pinned behind him).

His wife Elizabeth continued to run the farm with 4 very young sons for many years, as best she could, until it was sold. The oldest son “Jim Pott” went and opened up new areas in Texas, Thornton became mental challenged and remained committed in a Kentucky Facility, George remained single with his mom until her death in 1876, and Edward moved to TN with his second wife.

Their four sons were;

*James William “Jim Pott” Pottinger 3-25-1841 to 4-17-1919 m. Margaret Bonner 4 children: George D., William F., Louvenia R., Storey D.

*Thornton Pottinger 1844 to 6-16-1913 unmarried

*George Dallas Pottinger 1845 to 1879 unmarried

*Edward L. Pottinger 1847-1898 m.1) Eliza Stiles, 2 children; Emma, Martha, m.2) Mattie Alsbrook, no children.
