The third son and fifth child born to Michael and Cornelia (VAN NESS) VanDerCook, Henry first volunteered as a minuteman at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. He later served as a Private, Corporal, then Sergeant in the 14th Regiment of Albany County Militia, which was recruited from the Hoosick-Schagticoke area. An outline of his service can be found in the successful pension application of his widow, Anna Francisco VanDerCook VanNess (W.26,615). He is listed as an enlisted man in the 14th Albany Militia under the name Henry F. Cook in Roberts' NEW YORK IN THE REVOLUTION AS COLONY AND STATE. His children were:

1. Cornelia VanDerCook (1772-1858, married John GARRISON, eight children)
2. Alida "Olive" VanDerCook (1774-1829, married Andrew WEATHERWAX, thirteen children)
3. Hendrick (Henry) VanDerCook (1775-1835, the name of his wife is currently unknown)
4. Anneke VanDerCook (1777-?)
5. Sarah VanDerCook (1781-1871, married Andrew MORRISON, ten known children)
6. Levyntje VanDerCook (1784-?)
7. Jannetje VanDerCook (1786-1856, married Jacob Martin HAYNER, ten children)
8. Mary Nora VanDerCook (1788-1871, married William HAYNER, four known children)
9. Johannis VanDerCook (1791-1797)
