John Collins enlisted in Company C, 7th Indiana Regiment on August 17, 1861 at Rising Sun, Indiana, to serve three years. At the time of his enlistment he was 5 foot 7 inches tall, light complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, and was a farmer. He was wounded at the Battle of Port Republic in Virginia, which happened June 8 & 9, 1862. He was shot in his left wrist. Private John Collins was discharged from service on October 23, 1862 in New York. He applied for some pension benefits on June 8, 1863, stating he was an invalid because of the wound he received during the war. John married Elizabeth Jane "Eliza" Piles on August 19, 1864 in Switzerland county, Indiana. On April 19, 1869, John applied for an increase in his pension, stating his disability had increased and his occupation had been any light work that he could perform with one hand. Apparently after the war he moved to Ohio county, Indiana, where he married Lavinia Staughn on November 5, 1882.
