SULLIVAN - Philip A. "Poody" Rich, 87, died peacefully Wed-nesday, March 23, 2005, at his home in Sullivan. He was born Aug. 14, 1917, in Newburgh, the son of George and Ola M. (Reed) Rich. Philip was educated in Sullivan schools, and graduated from Sullivan High School, Class of 1935. He was the last surviving member of his class. He worked for many years caretaking homes in the Sullivan area, and greatly enjoyed working in the woods. He also enjoyed golfing. Philip was a member of the V.F.W. Post No. 109 in Ellsworth. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a Squad Leader of an Infantry Squad of 12 men, where he led men in combat. Philip served 35 months overseas in the Pacific with the 103rd Infantry Regiment of the 43rd Division. He served on Guadalcanal, New Georgia, New Guinea, and the Philippines. He was awarded four Battle Stars and the Combat Infantryman's Badge.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marion E. (Moon) Rich; three daughters, Judy Albee and her husband, Cliff, of Sullivan, Lori Kane and her husband, Bobby, of Hancock, and Mary Danico and her husband, Mark, of Hancock; eight grandchildren, John Albee, Jeremy, Jaclyn, Jacob, and Justin Kane, and Korey, Karmen, and Kaleb Danico; and a special friend, Andrew Abbott.

He was predeceased by a sister, Margaret McMahel, and a nephew, Gordon McMahel.
Graveside services will be held at a date to be announced in the springtime at Simpson Cemetery, Sullivan. (Bangor Daily News 3/25/2005)
