Kathleen Ruth Peck Probasco Ketchum, 66, of Moscow died Dec. 25, 2012, in Moscow.
Kathy followed many paths during this lifetime: child, wife, mother, editor, family historian/genealogist, listener, world traveler. She was born Feb. 25, 1946, in Addison, Lenawee County, Mich., to Milan Hart Peck and Ruth Alma Caroline Pfund. She earned a bachelor's degree in music education in 1968 from the University of Michigan and a Mrs. when she married Robert Charles Probasco of Lincoln, Neb., on Aug. 26, 1967, in Addison.
One son, Michael Robert Probasco, was born prematurely to Kathy and Bob (April 10, 1979). One son, Joseph Robert Probasco, was born March 3, 1981, to Patricia Kraft and adopted by Kathy and Bob at age 2 days. It was such fun being his parents and watching him mature and develop his incredible creative talents.
After Bob completed his master's degree in music in 1968, he and Kathy moved to Moscow, sight unseen, where Bob taught oboe, music theory and music history in the University of Idaho School of Music. Kathy's first boss was Don Kees, director of the Student Counseling Center, where she served as receptionist. Then Bruce Bray, a colleague from the School of Music, told her about his new job as faculty secretary and Kathy persuaded Bruce to hire her as his office manager. Bruce was her mentor until his retirement in 1990 and she owed much to him for her career choices and success.
Kathy's position was transferred to the Registrar's Office in 1992 with the new title of associate registrar and academic publications editor. She continued to edit the General Catalog and the Graduate Catalog, shepherd catalog changes through the various faculty committees and supervise various staff members in the office. She earned the title "Honored Staff Retiree" on Mar. 1, 2001, and celebrated at the Mariners' spring training camp in Arizona.
Next came her involvement with the small-business side of Moscow when she began volunteering at TJ's Books for the owners Joanne and Tom Whitacre. Kathy grew more and more enamored with working with the "town" part of the "town and gown" populace, and loved meeting new people every day at the store and listening to their stories. She bought the store from the Whitacres in January 2008 and owned it for three years. Scott Janke and Leah Evans-Janke bought the bookstore in January 2011, renamed it Read It Again, and changed locations.
Bob and Kathy had separated in December 2007, with each going different paths. Wayne Edward Ketchum invited Kathy out for dinner (Who's going to drop the first blob on their front?), showed up the next day with warm meatloaf, and courted Kathy as if she were 16. It was the best of times, with giggles and all. "Ketch" and Kathy were married on May 10, 2008. Unfortunately, Ketch's heart was too badly damaged to keep him functioning and he died on Aug. 24, 2009, but she would not have missed that wonderful time with him for all the tea in China.
Ketch was also survived by his daughters Alicia Kazda (Jeremy) and grandchildren Ruth, Dylan, and now Luke, of Lewiston, Idaho, and Patricia (Steven) Mullally of Mooresville, N.C.
