Dier Sikes was the son of Lt. Daniel Sikes (1743-1788) and Elizabeth Cawthon Sikes (1758-1823.

Daniel and Elizabeth's children:
1. Diocletion b. ca 1775
2. Josiah b. ca 1776
3. Mary "Mollie" b. 1779
4. Arthur b. ca 1787

When Dier was 13, on Mar 12, 1788 his family's home in Washington Co, GA was attacked by indians. His father was injured, but they fought the indians off. On the way to safety in the nearest fort, they were again accosted by the indians and several members of their party were killed, including his father, Daniel Sikes. His younger sister was scalped but survived.

Dier Sikes full name was a mystery for many years. In Vol. 9, Pioneers Of Wiregrass Georgia, Joseph Edward Spann, Jr stated "It is believed that Daniel Sikes was married about 1770 to Eliabeth Clifton (?)" [note the (?)]. Therefore, the name Dier Clifton seemed logical. When her name was found to be Cawthon, that theory no longer worked.
In the Second Land Lottery of Georgia, on the list of Fortunate Drawers from Montgomery Co receiving lots of 202-1/2 acres each were the names:

DIACLISTEN Sykes, of 58th District, Montgomery County, won Land Lot 50, 21st District, Wilkinson County, but did not take up the lot. It reverted to the state and was purchased by Allen Watson.
Arthur Sikes (orph. of Daniel), of 58th District, Montgomery County, won Land Lot 450, 7th District, Wilkinson County, but did not take up the lot. It reverted to the state and was purchased by Peter J. Williams.

So, was our ancestor named after a Roman Emperor or is there a better explanation for his name? Still a mystery!

Dier's first wife, P. E.'s maiden name is unknown. After her death, he married Martha Powell on Apr 6, 1845 in Tattnall Co, GA.

Dier and P. E. Sikes children:
1. Ezekiel b. abt 1804
2. Josiah b. abt 1806
3. Catherine b. abt 1808
4. Diannah b. abt 1811
