J. C. FLANDERS IS DEAD

INEVITABLE END OF LONG, EXHAUSTING ILLNESS COMES

Able Member of Pioneer Family, He Was Leader at Bar and in Public Affairs

After an illness that has lasted for several months, J. Couch Flanders, a prominent lawyer, passed away at his residence, 633 Flanders street shortly after 3 o'clock yesterday morning.

A period of coma-like unconsciousness lasted for several days prior to death, and some days ago the physicians realized the end was inevitable. There was no restoration to consciousness before death and death was the natural result of the continued drain on the constitution of the sick man the last few months have entailed.

The funeral ceremonies will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon in Trinity Church. The interment in Riverview Cemetery later will be private and attended only by near relatives.

Mr. Flanders was 45 years of age. His parents, George Hall and Maria Louise Flanders, were of New England Puritan stock. Mr. Flanders was born in Portland. The schools of Portland furnished Mr. Flanders with his early education. His preliminary work was done at Bishop Scott Academy and he entered Yale in 1881, taking the degree of A. B. in 1885.

In 1891 Mr. Flanders was appointed a member of the Port of Portland Commission. He is an ex-trustee of the Portland Chamber of Commerce and was a Lewis and Clark fair commissioner. Mr. Flanders was a staunch Democrat, has been a delegate to state and county conventions and was chairman of the county committee in 1896.

The Waverly Golf, Arlington and University Clubs have Mr. Flanders' name on their membership lists.

Mr. Flanders is survived by his widow and mother and three sisters, Miss Caroline W. Flanders, Miss M. Louise Flanders and Mrs. John Effinger. He has a number of near relatives, all of whom are residents in the city, with the exception of Mrs. Effinger, who lives in Honolulu.
