When he was 19, he married Mary Kathryn Oakley, daughter of John Oakley and Mary Ellen Spencer
Claude and Kathryn had one daughter.
Claude died on 17 Feb 1945, when while crossing the creek on a footbridge, he slipped and fell into the creek and drowned. During a turbulent time of war, with many local family members away fighting in Europe and Asia, Claude's family did not notify his siblings overseas of his passing. His brother later recalled what a horrible shock it was to have come home jubilant and thankful to have survived the war, only to find that his brother had died, back home in Tennessee.
