TUPELO – Dennis Wayne Owen, 79, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was born Dec. 1, 1933, in Union County to Manuel S. Owen and Onie Bell Kent Owen. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a graduate of Memphis State University. He was a former owner of the Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream Store and an investigator for Equifax. He was a Baptist.
Services will be 11 a.m. today at the United Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Don Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the Glenfield Memorial Park. United Funeral Service in New Albany is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Jannie Fleming Owen of Tupelo; a son, Garth Owen of Tupelo; and two grandchildren, Gracie Owen and Memphis Owen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Heath Owen; a sister, Mary Edith Smithey; a brother, Charles Malcolm "Mack" Owen; a brother-in-law, Hubert Smithey; and a sister-in-law, Patty Owen.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Kent, Tim Smithey, Rusty Smithey, Miles McDonald, Steve Watson and Richard Schlueter.
In honor of Owen, United Funeral Service Inc. will fly the flag of the United States Army at the funeral home during visitation and service.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. today at the funeral home.
