William Figula, son of William Figula (1914-1966) and Ilona (Helen) Szabó (1921-2009) was born in Elyria, Lorain County, Ohio on May 5, 1942. In 1952 his family moved to Lorain where he graduated from Clearview High School. He next attended Ohio State University in Columbus. In 1964 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he attended flight school and became a Navy pilot. He served two tours in Vietnam aboard the aircraft carriers USS Hancock and USS Constellation. Bill flew 203 missions over north Vietnam and received twenty-six air medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross, an honor for valor in combat. He was asked to join the Blue Angels flight demonstration team in 1969 but opted to leave the Navy. He returned to Ohio State and completed his education graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree.

Prior to 1973 he moved to California where he married Beverly Carson. After his divorce from Beverly he married Sharon R Steele. They had two children; Matthew Steele (1980) and Nathan William (1983). From 1976 until it closed in 1996 he worked for Powerine Oil Company. He then became a refinery operator with the San Joaquin Refinery in Bakersfield, CA.

Bill belonged to the Tri-Community Alliance church in Wrightwood, San Bernardino County, CA where he lived with his family prior to his death. He was an avid Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns fan and coached little league baseball while he sons were playing.

On Jan 12, 1999 he died from a massive heart attack outside his home in Wrightwood.
