Alfred Erlandson seated at center (partially obscured), directly behind the reclining soldier up front. The photo comes from the private collection belonging to Lenny Moore, with permission. Lenny Moore's grandfather was a member of this same military unit, the 96th Marines. The photo was taken Oct 1917 at Quantico, VA.

The WWI Sommepy American Monument stands atop Blanc Mont Ridge, commemorating the American units that served in combat with the French Fourth Army during the summer and fall of 1918 Image is at http://www.abmc.gov/memorials/memorials/sp.php

Corporal Alfred Erlandson was one of 28 men of the 96th Co., 2nd Div, 6th Marine Regt KIA on October 3, 1918, in the initial assault on Blanc Mont Ridge.

'To be able to say when this war is finshed, "I belonged to the 2nd Div, I fought with it at the Battle of Blanc Mont Ridge" will be the highest honour that can come to any man' - Maj-Gen John A Lejeune USMC.
