His son Edward left Waterloo some thirty years ago, and has since been a resident of the city of New York, where his funeral took place last Thursday.
He held for more than a quarter of a century a highly responsible post in the sub-treasury. In this position his services were recognized as almost invaluable, and his wonderful power of detecting spurious and light-weight coin, together with hie faithful and exceptional accuracy In the discharge of the duties of his most responsible trust, as the head of the coin department of the office, gave him a wide reputation. In consequences he retained his position among all the changes of parties for nearly thirty years.
Mr. Birdsall married Miss Jane Glover of Waterloo, who died some years ago, leaving one son, Glover Birdsall, who survives his father. After leaving the sub-treasury, the Waterloo News says:
Mr. Birdsall opened a brokers office in New York where he was very successful. He was 55 years of age, very gentlemanly, courteous, stately, distinguished in appearance, and generous of nature, characteristics that he doubtless inherited. He was a good son to his aged parents who resided in Waterloo;and had many warm personal friends who mourn his loss.
