Thomas Harms Garrels, born August 29,, 1870, in Ost-Grossefehn, Germany, immigrated to America in 1889. He settled with cousins in Jones County, Iowa. He left Germany as employment there was scarce and primarily he did not believe in the compulsory military policy of Germany. He was the only one of his family to come to America. He had intensions of visiting his homeland again but never did return.
He married Antoinette Heeren in 1892 and they established their homes on various farms in Putnam Township. There six children were Alma, Mrs. Albert Betz) of Maynard, Herman of Epworth, Lydia, (Mrs. Guy Handy) of Oelwein, Freda, (Mrs. Earl Anton) of Oelwein, Elsie, (Mrs. Irvin Scharff) of Aurora and Oelwein and Albert of Oelwein.
Thomas died in 1949 and Antoinette in 1957. They, their children and spouses are buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein, Iowa.
