Mrs Martina H Overdeer

Martina Hutchinson, daughter of George W and M Gertrude Hutchinson, was born September 4, 1878, at Hartford City, Indiana, and died the morning of March 13, 1920, at the parsonage home at Auburn, Indiana.

Her early life was spent at Hartford City, where she graduated from the high school in the class of 1896, and for some years following she efficiently did the work of bookkeeper for her father, who was engaged in the hardware business at Hartford City.

She united with the Methodist Church in early girlhood, and was ever a faithful and efficient worker, serving several years as secretary of the Sunday school and also as an officer of the Epworth League. She was one of the faithful and dependable workers in the things necessary for the advaricerhent of her Redeemer's cause.

On December 28, 1905, she was united in marriage to Harley L Overdeer. Together they had as young people graduated in the same class from high school, and together worked in the Hartford City Epworth League and Sunday school, and then with united hearts and lives they engaged in the regular work of the ministry, being first located at Farmersville, Illinois.

They transferred to the North Indiana Conference in 1908, in which Conference they together served pastorates at Farmland; Middle Street, Wabash; Market Street, Logansport; Simpson Church, Fort Wayne; Grace Church, Richmond; and First Church, Auburn.

Throughout life, her hands and heart have faithfully done the work of her Redeemer. A character - quiet, modest, unselfish, and loving. With her home-making, loving disposition, her home was first in her affections.

Their home was blessed with two children: John H, now thirteen years old, and Virginia, eleven. These, her husband, together with her mother, Mrs Hutchinson, and Mrs C N Cline, her sister, of Kendallville, and her brother, R M Hutchinson, of South Bend, all survive her, as well as a large number of relatives living at Hartford City and vicinity. All deeply morn her departure.

Mrs Overdeer has been the teacher of the "Corunna Girls" Class of the Sunday school since she has been in Auburn, and the loss of her kindly direction and teaching is keenly felt. She was a vice-president of the Woman's Home Missionary Society of Fort Wayne District, and a member of the Entre Nous Literary Club, of Auburn.

A woman of sterling worth and noble character has been called from her duties here to the higher life. The example of her life here is left as an inspiration and worthy ideal for her loved ones, as well as for all who knew her.

The funeral services were conducted from the church at Auburn on Tuesday, March 16, 1920, at 1:30 pm, with Rev B S Hollopeter in charge. The Scripture lessons were read by the Rev T M Guild. Prayer was offered by Rev Mr Bourns, pastor of the Presbyterian Church; Rev O A Trabue read the memoir; and the sermon was preached by Rev L M Krider, from the text, Heb 11:16. The body was interred at Kendallville, Indiana.
