Rebecca Green Jacobs was born in Pocatello, Idaho, December 16, 1924, to Jared Ward and Preil Harrison Green. In the early hours of Thursday, January 19, 2012, Rebecca died at 87, being reunited with her beloved husband, Eugene B. Jacobs, Jr. (Gene), who preceded her in death.
She is survived by four children: Douglas Jacobs of Los Angeles, CA, Lorna Jacobs Reed (Hartwell) of Provo, UT, Reed Jacobs (Dayna) of King City, CA, and Craig Jacobs (Lisa) of Jefferson City, MO, 23 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, her sister, Barbara Green Pimentel (Douglas, deceased), and her brother Thomas Harrison Green (Norene). She was preceded in death by one child, Stephen Eugene Jacobs.
Rebecca and her husband of 63 years met on a church dance floor, during the Big Band era of swing dancing. She and Gene married on May 20, 1944, while he was on a ten day leave from the United States Navy. While he served his country in WWII, Rebecca pursued her education as a pre-med student at UC Berkeley. During the war, while still in high school, she worked as a chemist at Shell Oil. Rebecca's love of learning, arts, sciences, and education lifted the lives of all she touched, including her husband's education and career, children and grandchildren's pursuits, Sorosis and Great Book club participants over many years, as well as children and teenagers in need of tutoring in reading, science, and math. Her personal devotion to education earned her degrees in Elementary Education at California State University at Northridge in 1965 and in Accounting at Brigham Young University in 1986.
Rebecca's appreciation for beautiful and lovely furnishings, textiles, music, and literature was inherited and learned from her mother, Preil. As well, she was a fine seamstress and embroiderer in the tradition of her mother, and later studied power sewing in Los Angeles. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and hosting guests-particularly extended family with all the comings and goings of resident students and family travel through Provo. She was particularly fond of ice cream and enjoyed every opportunity to serve it up to siblings, children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews who frequented their home over the three decades they lived in Provo. Prior to living in Provo, the family resided in Woodland Hills, CA from 1960 to 1980, having relocated their young family from Berkeley, CA. Rebecca moved with her parents from Pocatello, ID to Berkeley, CA in 1941 when she was a 16 year old high school student. Wherever she went, she made friends easily by being a good friend. She will be greatly missed. We look ahead, with hope, to lay hold upon every good thing and be reunited with Rebecca.
Funeral services will be held Monday, January 30, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. in the Edgemont 8th Ward Chapel, 3050 Mojave Lane, Provo. Friends may call at Berg Mortuary, 185 East Center Street, Provo, Sunday, January 29, 2012, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and at the church Monday one hour prior to services. Interment will be at the Provo City Cemetery.
