When Uncle Manuel Crissman died, Aunt Bessie was almost blind. She continued to operate a small general merchandise store near Mount Airy, NC. Her neighbors would purchase items from her store, pay for them and count their own change because Aunt Bessie could not see.
A miracle happened one day when a member of the Lions Club came into her store and discovered that she was nearly blind. The stranger arranged for her to have an eye examination in one of the Lions Club clinics, which resulted in an operation that restored her sight.
During her recovery at the clinic, she met Mr. Johnson there who also had surgery on his eyes. This meeting resulted in two widowed senior adults getting married. Aunt Bessie moved to the hometown of Mr. Johnson in Columbia, MS.
Later Mr. Johnson died and Aunt Bessie moved into a nursing home in Columbia. I visited her several times in the nursing home and she told me many stories of growing up in Irisburg, VA with her brothers and sisters.
