PITTSFORD - Gussie Spaulding Smith, 94, died December 19, 2012, at Mountain View Health Care Center in Rutland.

She was born January 24, 1918, in Pittsford, VT, the daughter of Waven H. and Jessie Turner Spaulding.

She graduated from Pittsford High School and Rutland Business College, and married Robert L. Smith of Ira, Vermont, on June 27, 1942.

In earlier years, she was employed by the Jones & Lamson Company of Springfield, Vt., Jerome Tennien Appraisal Company of Pittsford, and retired from the Trust Department of Proctor Trust Company.

Gussie was a 60-plus-year member of the Pittsford Congregational Church, and was also a long-time member of the Order of Eastern Star, the 1918 Club, the 251 Club and the Pittsford Historical Society.

Gussie truly enjoyed her family and friends (especially grandkids and great-grandchildren.) Over the years she had traced both the Smith and Spaulding genealogy back to the 1,700 and 1,800s, traveling extensively throughout Vermont and bordering states to complete the ancestry roots. She was an avid reader and enjoyed writing in her daily journal. She and Robert both enjoyed helping their son Ronald with his numerous Barn Sales during the summer and fall months each year.

Survivors include her children, Ronald Smith of Pittsford, and Lynne Washburn and husband Nelson of Rutland; her grandchildren Scott and Jen Smith of Shelburne, Amy Smith of New Market, N.H., and Jason Washburn and Justin Washburn, both of Killington; her great-grandchildren Jackson Washburn, Grace and Caroline Lunney, and Lily and Addison Smith.

She is also survived by her brother-in-law, John Smith of West Rutland, and two sisters-in-law, Ruth Thrall, also of West Rutland, and Sue Smith of Center Rutland, together with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert in April 2010, and her siblings Feme Mills, and Herbert and Glenn Spaulding.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 21, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford, followed by a reception immediately after at the Pittsford Congregational Church Fellowship Hall.

Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Pittsford at the family's convenience.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Pittsford Historical Society, Box 423, Pittsford, VT 05763. The family of Gussie wish to thank Mountain View staff for their care and compassion shown her during her stay.
