His father was John (Johann) Hedrick who was from Germany but settled in New York. He arrived before 1824, since he married in NY in that year. The early 1800's in Germany were a time of war and many young men who feared being drafted by one army or another just took off, often without gov't clearance and often changing their names until they arrived in the US. Family lore says that many Hedricks went first to Holland and then shipped to America from there.
John married a widow, Mary Crow Terrell, in 1824 in NY. She was a daughter of John Crow from England but she was born in Long Island, NY in 1803.After John Hedrick died, Mary married Thomas Francis Carman, a whaler by trade. They moved their family to Sanilac County, MI. Their son Francis Carman was pretty well-known in Worth Township, Sanilac Co., Michigan. The Carman Cemetery is where John and Mary Hedrick's son, Alfred Hedrick is buried.
Alfred's brother George Hedrick married Mercena (Marlina in some records) VanCamp. She died during the Civil War, and after the war George married Salinda Mills and moved the family to Iowa.
