Illness Claims Life Of Everett J. Culp
Everett J. Culp, a lifetime Mishawaka resident active in local Masonic
activities, died at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday in his residence at 1605 Liberty Dr. He
was 65.
He had been worshipful master of the Mishawaka Lodge 130, Free and Accepted
Masons, in 1960 and had also been active in Mishawaka Commandary 51, Knights
Templar, Mishawaka Council 19, Royal and Select Masters, Mishawaka Chapter 83,
Royal Arch Masons, and South Bend Consistory 22, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite.
He was past patron of Mishawaka Chapter 267, Order of Eastern Star, and a
past watchman of Shepherds of Mishawaka Hope Shrine 22, White Shrine of
Jerusalem.
Born in South Bend on June 16, 19o4. Mr. Culp had been employed for 22 years
by the Studebaker Corp., South Bend, until it shut down and then worked as a
carpenter for the city of Mishawaka for the last five and one-half years.
In Mishawaka on June 12, 192, he married Edna Picking who survives along with
three sons, Lawrence F., Ernest J., a former city councilman, and Charles R., a
Mishawaka police officer, all of Mishawaka; one daughter, Mrs. Thomas Myers of
Taylor, Mich.; four sisters, Mrs. Irene Thompson of Huarte, Calif.; Mrs. Fern
Bishop, Miss Donnabelle Smith, both of South Bend; Mrs. Oscar Bruegel of
Mishawaka; 11 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Culp enlisted in the U.S. Army on Aug.13, 1919, at the age of 15 and was
made a sergeant on Dec.4, 1920 when he was 16 years old. He graduated as an
airship engineer from the Airship School at Longley Field, Hampton, Va., in 1920
and was discharged in 1922.
During the 1940's he was active in the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member
of the First United Methodist Church.
Friends may call after 7 p.m. today in the Bubb Funeral Chapel where
arrangements are being completed.
