Gysbertje was the daughter of Martinus and Grietje (van Rooden) de Jong who had immigrated from the Netherlands in 1865. She spent her early days on a farm in Black Oak Township, Mahaska Co Iowa. She married Jacob Pothoven, also a farmer, in 1891. They farmed in Richland Township near her brothers Peter J. and Arie.

They had six children - Martha, Martinus, Otto, Garret, Henry and Peternella (Nellie).

They moved from the farm to 506 East Liberty Street, Pella, in 1925. Gysbertje was a large woman and each fall tried to find as many window screens as she could to dry apple slices.

After her husband's death in 1938, she moved to the home across from the Second Christian Reformed Church in Pella.
