A. Virgil Amason, 84, of El Dorado, died on Saturday, June 30, 2007, at his residence. Born on Oct. 15, 1922, in Calion, he was the son of the late Jesse Thomas and Versa Clara Murph Amason. He was a U.S. Marine Corps major and veteran of the Korean War; a timber buyer and foreman for Calion Lumber Co.; a member of Sons of the Confederacy and Marrable Hill Chapel. He enjoyed reading, gardening and making wine.


He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Patricia Anne James Amason; his parents; and a brother, Carl Amason.


Survivors include two sons, Jesse Michael Amason of Calion and James Alton Amason of Leavenworth, Kan.; two daughters, Susan Elaine Miller of Keithville, La., and Deborah Anne Hicks of Little Rock; a brother, Burnie Amason of Fordyce; seven grandchildren, Annette Michelle, Charlie, Melissa, Sharon, Jessica, Bonnie and Thomas; four great-grandchildren, Samantha, James, Elizabeth and Aubrey; several nephews; nieces and many dear friends.


Graveside service will be Tuesday in Bethel Primitive Baptist Cemetery with the Rev. Sam Shepperson officiating. Burial will be under the direction of Young's Funeral Directors.


The family invites friends to join them at the Amason residence, 6926 Calion Highway, from 5 to 7 tonight for a time of fellowship and remembrance.
