Maydell was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother and friend. She had a very loving nature and was known for her sweet and gentle spirit. Maydell was a woman of love, grace, faith and lived her life everyday exemplifying Christianity. A gifted artist and talented teacher, Maydell captured her love for the beauty of nature in many of her spectacular paintings. She especially loved the beauty of roses, the splendor of hummingbirds and the majestic Colorado mountains-which she often referred to as "God's Country". Maydell shared her passion for painting with her art students, many who were her friends and family, and had the blessing of learning from her "Going to church" and "always having a purpose" is what Maydell attributed her longevity in life. Even her final days on earth were spent helping others, including serving as a transition counselor to help her new neighbors feel welcome at Brookdale Assisted Living facility. Maydell's 102 years of life can truly be celebrated with the wonderful influence she had in the lives of many.
Maydell is preceded in death by her husband, Ronald David (Scotty) Howard; her parents, Lee and Mary Skains; her brothers, Werner and Raymond Skains; and her sisters, Leola Collins and Myriene Hanson.
Maydell is survived by her daughters, Phyllis Neff of Grand Junction, CO. and Susan Bowman of Georgetown, TX.; her son, Bob Howard of San Antonio; grandchildren Gylynn Hanson, Bobby Howard, Ashley Howard, Sophie Martin and Ned Prestridge; nine great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
