Owen Austin Ethelred Blake was born on June 30, 1922 to the late Thomas Blake and Beatrice Blake (nee Hanson) in Rosehall, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, West Indies.
He attended Rosehall Primary School after which he received training as a Professional Tailor. He took great pride in the clothing that he made. He was always properly attired and he instilled this in his children.
He migrated to England in the late 1950s where he worked in the garment industry. He married Veronica Blythe in England.They left England for the United States in the 1970s where they resided in Queens, New York. While in New York, Owen worked at T&B Leather in Manhattan for several years.
Owen loved the soil. His backyard farm was the "talk of the town" and provided produce for many relatives and friends which he to generously and from his heart.
After retiring, he relocated to Ocala, Florida with his wife Veronica who predeceased him in 2003. In Ocala, he continued his backyard farm sharing his crop willingly with his many friends.
He also enjoyed his favorite sport "cricket, lovely cricket" and helped to form the Silver Shores Cricket and Social Club of which he was an avid member. He received several awards for his dedication and contribution to the welfare of the Club. He was also an excellent domino player and could be heard laughing when he "dropped six love" on other players. He passed on the art of the game to his youngest son, Michael, who on one occasion while visiting his sister Sonia in Southeast Florida "dropped six love" on her church brothers.
Owen was a happy person, always smiling, very devoted and helpful to family and friends. He always said thank you and was grateful for whatever anyone did for him. He never forgot the land of his birth, Jamaica, where he visited frequently to enjoy "the good food" as he would often say.
He was a faithful member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Ocala, Florida for many years.
His children are forever grateful to his caregiver. Ms Etheline Clarke for taking such good care of him over the past seven years.
He leaves to cherish his memory, daughter, Sonia, sons, Winston, Donovan, Michael and stepson Roy. Also several grandchildren, among them his two favorites, Sheryl and Natasha, great grandchildren, sister Girlie, nieces Angela, Fern, Iota, Marcia, Patricia, Renee, and Winsome, nephews, Byron, Dougs, Hixford, Hugh, John and Raymond, and a host of relatives and friends.
