Asahel lived in the village of Greenbush in the town of Weathersfield, Windsor Co., VT his entire life. According to probate records, Abraham Lockwood became Asahel's guardian on July 7, 1807, just a few months after his father's death. His first wife, Fanny, died within a couple of weeks after the birth of their daughter, Fanny Bridge Chillson.

Asahel's second wife was Clorinda Gilbert. All their children were born in the same home and Clorinda lived there till the children grew up. Asahel was sick and bedridden for 13 years. He was quite young when taken ill. He became bedfast with what was called Rose Cancer of the stomach. He had to be fed frequently. The children read the bible to him much of the time. They could easily quote scripture and always knew an appropriate verse for the occasion.
