Civil War Union Army Officer. He was serving as a Justice of the Peace when the Civil War started. He helped recruit and mustered in the 15th Pennsylvania (Three Month) Volunteer Infantry, and was commissioned its Colonel and commander on April 27, 1861. The unit was mustered out on August 8,1861, and a year later he was commissioned as Colonel and commander of the 132nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (August 22, 1862). Less then a month later he was leading his new regiment at the September 17, 1862 Battle of Antietam, where he was killed in action by the Sunken Road in the opening stages of the engagement.
