SOWERS
John F. Sowers, Sr., 87, a resident of Landsun Homes Inc., died Saturday (Oct, 3, 1992) at Landsun Health Care Center.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Denton Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Ed Williamson, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, will officiate.
Burial will be in Sunset Gardens Cemetery with Masonic Rites offered by the Eddy Lodge #21 AF&AM at the graveside. A Lodge of Sorrow will convene at 9:30 a.m. at the Masonic Temple.
Mr. Sowers were born June 20, 1905, in Thomas, W.Va. The family moved to Ohio. He began working in the coal mines when he was 9 years old. He married Mary A. Karasack on March 3, 1924, in Blairsville, Ohio. He worked as a coal miner in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania before moving to Carlsbad in 1952. He worked here as general superintendent for Southwest Potash, which was formerly Amax Potash Corp. and currently Horizon Gold Potash Corp.
He retired from Southwest Potash in 1968 and worked as a private mining consultant until 1974.
Mr. Sowers was active in the Masonic Lodge, a member of the Smithville, Ohio, Lodge #182 AF&AM, a member of the Scottih Rite of the Steubenville, Ohio, Consistory, and a member of the Ballut Abyad Temple A of Albuquerque.
Survivors include his wife, Mary A. Sowers, and three sons, John F. Sowers Jr., Harold "Butch" Sowers and Rick Sowers, all of Carlsbad; four daughters, Virginia Hudock of St. Clairsville, Ohio, Leona Morse of Dillonvale, Ohio, Jeanine McDonald of Vian, Okla., and Patricia Vincenti of Pampa, Texas; one brother, Bob Sowers of Columbus, Ohio; one sister, Nell King of South San Gabriel, Calif.; 25 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
