John E. Faulkner joined the 9th Tennessee Infantry, CSA on May 14, 1861 as a private. John was severely wounded at the battle of Shiloh, however, he recovered to fight again another day. On March 27th, 1864, John was promoted to the rank of Ensign {LT. Color Bearer} of his regiment. In July 1864 at the battle of Atlanta, John was wounded again and was sent to a hospital in Macon, Georgia. John returned to his regiment once again in time for the battle of Franklin and Nashville in late 1864. John surrendered with the remainder of the Army of Tennessee in Smithfield, North Carolina in April 1865.
