Joan M. Clapp, 83, of Columbia City, died at 5:35 a.m. Friday, December 7, 2012 at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.

She was born July 19, 1929 on the family farm south of Larwill, Indiana a daughter of C. Earl and Hazel L. (Schuh) Norris. Her formative years were spent in Larwill. She attended Larwill High School where she was a cheerleader her junior year and graduated with the Class of 1947. She then attended Wayne University Beauty College, Fort Wayne.

On August 20, 1950, she was united in marriage to Douglas R. Clapp. They made their home southwest of Columbia City. Mr. Clapp died July 4, 1989. In 1990, she moved to Loon Lake and in 2004 to Oak Pointe Columbia City.

Following the completion of beautician training, she was employed by LaCharm Beauty Shop in Columbia City. She then became a receptionist at Weatherhead, Columbia City. She worked as a teacher's aide at Mary Raber School for 17 years and was a Girls Scout Leader, Cub Scout assistant and a volunteer at the Fort Wayne Botanical Gardens.

Her memberships included Columbia City United Methodist Church, where she taught fourth grade Sunday school, Delta Theta Tau Gamma Chapter, People Preserving History, Whitley County, Coterie, and a member of the Bridge Club since 1954.

She enjoyed golf, playing bridge and reading. She leaves a legacy of love and devotion to family.

Surviving relatives include a son, Richard D. (Rebecca) Clapp, Churubusco, two daughters, Patrice (Dr. Al) Martin, Lowell and Karen (Michael) Henline, Huntington; 6 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; a brother, Dean Norris, Fort Wayne and a sister, Violet Hileman Pfister, Fort Wayne.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Rex, Max and Bruce Norris.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Burial will be in the South Park Cemetery. The visitation will be 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
