John Edward Burns was born January 20, 1911 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He was the son of John Michael Burns and Eva Josephine Tillotson.

As a boy John was an all-city tennis champion. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois, an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago, and a J.D. from Loyola University.

John married Arlene R. Ruthenberg on August 18, 1949. Arlene was born January 2, 1917 to Herman and Bertha (Wechsel) Ruthenberg. Bertha died when Arlene was three years old,
so she was actually reared by Herman's second wife Louise.

John practiced business law and was a professor of management at Depaul University in Chicago, Illinois. He was awarded emeritus status upon his retirement.

John and Arlene had been married for 51 years at the time of Arlene's death. John died October 12, 2007 in Western Springs, Illinois.
